Stripping, refinishing 120 yr old floor?

I recently tore the carpet up in my 1885 built farmhouse, to find hardwood floors. They need a little patching, and I think I use a woodfiller of some type for the few cracks in the floor. Some of the floor is painted, and I have bought paint stripper for that. I plan on stripping, renting a belt sander and then re-staining and varnishing. I have the safety materials I need already, I understand the hazards of lead based paints. Does anyone have any suggestions or advice to make it look the best? I want to stain it a dark wood if that matters. Thanks in advance for your thoughtful answers.

Refinishing hardwood floors with bad wood stains?

Hi, when I first moved into my home, I discovered under the carpet was hardwood floors! At the time, my husband didnt want to help me refinish them, so I just took a hand sander and basically sanded off the first layer of stain, then I noticed how badly the floor had water spots. So i decided to put a darker stain on the wood to help cover it up. Well, the more I look at the wood now, the more I want to refinish it again, but this time do it right and rent a drum sander. But I dont want to get this big project going, if theres no way I can get ride of the water stains on the wood? I’m afraid the stains in the wood are real deep, and regardless of how much I sand those spots, they wont come out? Am I wrong? If I get a drum sander, would that take care of the problem? Or do I need to put some kind of bleach or chemical to help make the stain lighter so it will match the rest of the floors? Thanks!!

Do I have to sand my hardwood floor in order to refinish?

We found that we have hardwood floor under our carpet. We prepped the floor by taking out the floor tacks and staples. We went to rent the floor sander and the guy at the store said that it would save us money on sand paper to strip the varnish first and then sand the floor. So, we now have the floor stripped of varnish and we plan on staining our floor a dark dark brown. Do we still need to sand the floor since we stripped the varnish, or can we just wipe it down and start staining?
