What can I use to seal/protect my hardwood floor?

I have animals (dogs are the culprits; cats are in basement and don’t come up) who, due to health problems, urinate on the hardwood flooring. I’m not sure what kind of finish it has now, but I’d venture a guess that it’s waxed. Anyway, the dog pee eats right through the finish, and if we don’t catch it while it’s wet, it stains a darker color as well. **When we refinish the floors, is there any product out there that’s urine-proof? I’ve heard good things about Varathane, but no one can say if it’s pee-proof, and I’d rather not go through the entire process and be back to square one. Getting rid of the dogs or anything with the dogs (potty-training/leaving outside)is not an option.
